Folding Arm Awnings: how much wind is too much?

NEWS

When it comes to enhancing outdoor spaces, Luxaflex Folding Arm Awnings are a popular choice for providing shade and comfort. Designed for sun and UV protection, these versatile structures provide flexibility in outdoor living: providing shade when required and preserving an unobstructed outdoor space when not.

Understanding Wind

While excellent for providing protection from sunlight and UV rays, Folding Arm Awnings are not designed to withstand strong winds. To ensure longevity, it is important to protect your awning from weather damage and to know how to identify when conditions become unsuitable.

The Beaufort scale, created in 1805, is a handy tool for estimating wind strength and is still widely used to gauge how much wind an awning can handle. Most retractable awnings, like those in our Nordic Folding Arm Awning Range, are designed to withstand winds rated at level 5 on the Beaufort scale, which translates to wind speeds of 29-38 km/hr. This rating can vary based on the awning’s size, how it’s installed, and its design.

The Beaufort scale

Here’s a quick guide to the Beaufort scale:

  • 0-3: Calm to Gentle Breeze (0-19 km/hr) – You’ll barely feel the wind, leaves may rustle a bit, and water has a glassy look.
  • 4: Moderate Breeze (20-28 km/hr) – Dust and leaves will be picked up, small branches might sway, and small waves start forming.
  • 5: Fresh Breeze (29-38 km/hr) – Small trees in leaf begin to sway, and you’ll see moderate waves.

Pro Tip: Wind gusts can be about 40% stronger than the average forecasted wind speeds. So, if you find that enjoying your outdoor space is getting challenging or your book’s pages are flipping on their own, it’s a good idea to retract your awning for safety!

Recommended awnings for windier locations

If living in a location which often experiences wind, the Luxaflex® Sunrain® Awning may be the perfect option for you.

This awning is available with a Wind Protect System which increases its wind resistance for up to 65km/hr winds.

By stabilising the front bar, less strain is put on the hardware therefore extending the awning’s life. With removable feet and front rail clip, the telescopic wind protect poles collapse for easy storage when not in use. Available for heights between 2 - 2.5 metres from ground to front rail.

How to Protect your Retractable Awning

Choosing a suitable location

When installing an awning, it is important to carefully consider the location and how windy it can be at certain times of the year or in certain conditions.

Is it exposed to the elements? Does it get particularly windy? Consider speaking with an expert consultant about whether the planned location is in fact suitable for a folding arm awning or whether there is a more ideal option.

Investing in a motion sensor

For extra peace of mind, all motorised awnings within the Luxaflex® range can be equipped with motion sensors which are triggered at certain wind speeds – causing the awning to automatically retract.

Even when you do have sensors installed, it’s important to be mindful of the conditions and retract the awning yourself if wind speeds are looking unsuitable.

Stay informed about the weather

Check the weather forecast throughout the day to stay informed about any expected wind or wind gusts.

Retracting your awning when not in use

Folding arm awnings are designed to be retracted when not in use, especially during inclement weather. Remembering to retract your awning not only keeps it clean but also helps prevent unnecessary damage. By taking this simple precaution, you can extend the lifespan of your awning and ensure it remains in great condition for future use.
