DNA of Design - Deb & Andy – House 2

INSPIRATION

Ever since Deb and Andy Saunders appeared on The Block in 2019, they’ve been helping Australians with their design and decorating dilemmas. Recently, they launched a new online series, DNA of Design, in which the couple tackle house renovations head on, and have plenty of fun in the process. It’s a renovation series with a focus on creating beautiful spaces inspired by wellness, lifestyle, and togetherness.

In their second major renovation, the couple had quite the task in front of them: re-invent a sprawling six-bedroom home in the Gold Coast Hinterland. The interiors were dated, and the house lacked cohesion and flow. Working closely with the owner, Deb and Andy completely transformed the home into a breezy, light-filled space with some jaw-dropping design elements.

Main living, kitchen, and dining area

This spectacular space was completely remodelled and transformed, with a new mezzanine level and soaring sandstone fireplace. Opening onto an elevated pool and entertaining area, it creates a seamless flow between the indoors and outdoors.

Floor-to-ceiling Luxaflex® Curtains add a sense of drama, style, and sophistication. Soft and billowy, they maximise the flow of light into this vast space, while also ensuring privacy.

Deb and Andy chose a sheer curtain, in Ivy fabric and Lace colour, which perfectly complements the interiors. Due to the scale of these curtains, the couple also chose to install Luxaflex® PowerView® Motorisation, which means they can be opened and closed with the touch of a button. The owners can also use the automation feature to enable the curtains to open/close at certain times of the day—a particularly useful feature when on holidays.

The same style Luxaflex® Curtains were also used to cover the windows in a breakout living space off the main area. However, in this space, the curtains were also paired with Luxaflex® Duette® Shades, in a smart ‘bottom-up’ configuration. These shades were chosen in Elan fabric and in Daisy White colour, but with blockout opacity. This enables the owners to create a dark space that’s ideal for watching TV or movies.

Bedrooms

This vast home has six bedrooms as well as a study. In each of these rooms, Deb and Andy installed Luxaflex® Duette® Shades in Elan fabric and in Daisy White colour. They also chose blockout opacity to create tranquil spaces for sleeping.

As well as blocking light and sound, these innovative Luxaflex® Duette® Shades help moderate temperatures inside each room. Their unique honeycomb shaped cells effectively trap air and form an insulating barrier that keeps the rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

The master bedroom of this home was also completely transformed into a parents’ retreat – with a vast bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in robes.

A combination of Luxaflex® Duette® Shades and Luxaflex® Curtains were used to mirror the sophistication and softness found in the main living area.

“In the master bedroom we used Luxaflex Duette blinds,” says Deb. “They provide privacy and keep the room dark, while the S-wave sheer curtains allow beautiful, filtered light to fill the entire room.”

Using these innovative shades in the bedrooms delivered a range of important benefits. As well as looking sophisticated and stylish, they also ensure privacy, provide insulation, and dampen sound—creating a peaceful haven for sleeping.

Luxaflex® Duette® Shades also come with a range of different operating models and in various configurations, to suit each home and room. In the master bedroom, Deb and Andy selected Ultraglide® operation, and a flexible top-down-bottom-up configuration, which means the shades can either be drawn at the bottom or the top of the window, depending on where sunlight is entering the room.

Outside

Luxaflex® awnings were also used to transform the exterior of this grand home.

A Luxaflex® Evo Pivot Arm Awning was used to cover the window on the far right of the front of the home. This was chosen in Everscreen fabric and in White Sand colour, with Sunscreen opacity. This provides important UV protection and blocks harmful rays from entering the interior of the home.

An innovative Luxaflex® Evo Cable Awning was also used to create a new outdoor space which, essentially, functions as a new room. Featuring stainless steel cables, this awning is particularly sturdy and provides a great option when fixing a channel to wall isn’t possible.

“The house faces west, which creates a lot of heat in the Queensland summer. To keep the house cool we installed Luxaflex® Evo Awnings. This keeps everything cool while looking super stylish,” says Deb.
